Foreword

In their search of more knowledge concerning laser therapy and buccal pathologies, our colleagues have asked us to put together an objective and illustrated manual. We have gathered scientific data and formulated clinical protocols that have proved to be safe and effective for over 20 years.

The Atlas of Laser Therapy Applied to Clinical Dentistry comprises our team’s clinical experience in several dental specializations with protocols that will guide our colleagues in the diagnostic approach, application points and dosimetries to be used. The positive results obtained encourage us to disseminate this knowledge, as we understand that more patients could receive this kind of treatment, especially those who suffer from pathologies that lack a more effective treatment, and where laser therapy can bridge that gap.

In Latin America we were pioneers in setting up a Center for Laser Dentistry and the first Laser in Dentistry Course in a graduate course at Faculdade de Odontologia Camilo Castelo Branco in São Paulo, where an average of 800 patients are treated each semester.

The use of Laser Therapy in Brazil was only possible thanks to the support of Professor Walter Genovese, who believed in us and authorized the opening of this Laser Center.

Our team has been working together for over 15 years, and has witnessed the evolution of Laser Therapy as a science and the growing interest of professionals in the applications of this technique. Each one of us got acquainted with the Laser in a different way and at a different stage of our professional lives. Ana Eliza dos Santos and Elisângela Bologna started out as monitors at the Laser Center and today are professors and researchers; soon thereafter, Luciana Lopes joined us. However, she is no longer with us, since she moved to the countryside of the State of São Paulo; Thereza Christinna Ladalardo was preparing for her Master’s thesis and has ever since been working full-time with the clinic’s team and taking part in scientific activities. All of us are constantly looking for new alternatives and possibilities regarding this revolutionary technique.

There are many vivid memories: the first laser that was brought from Europe in 1983; Professor Benedicenti’s courses in Italy; the different kinds of lasers studied together with other sources of light; Diode Lasers and LED’s, developed by a group of NASA researchers, with whom we are permanently in contact.

Several exchange programs were set up, and integration of professionals around the world took place. The studies of Laser Therapy became multidisciplinary and multicentric.

The result and acknowledgement came in the form of our nomination for the World Presidency of WALT (World Association of Laser Therapy) for 2004-2006.

Above all, this book was written to be our colleagues’ partner when using Laser Therapy. We are at your disposal to exchange information and clarify any doubts.

We hope you have fun while reading this book!
