Description:

The growing proportion of older age groups in the population has given rise to a need for readily accesible sources of information on the biology of aging in the human. This unique volume brings together what is known about normal aging processes in the mouths of healthy subjects, information which hither to was widely scattered in the literature. Ten chapters, primarily reviews which also incorporate new data and written by invited experts in the field, give an up-to-date overview of the changes observed in the normal process of aging in oral soft tissues and in oral function in healthy older subjects. The book therefore provides an anatomical, physiological and biochemical basis against which oral pathological changes can be evaluated, and will help in understanding some of the limitations in treatment of the older patient.

Following a brief overview of the effects of aging on the physiology of the mouth, oral morphological changes are first examined. Chapters deal with age-related alterations in the morphological of the dental pulp, the major and minos salivary glands, and changes in tooth pulp and dentine innervation with age. Metabolic changes are the focus of the next chapters. Coverage is given to present knowledge on age-related changes in collagen of the mandibular and maxillary bones, and alterations in the process of protein synthesis in salivary glands. Recent development in pulp collagen research are also brought together. This is followed by a study of changes in salivary gland function in terms of flow and composition. Oral function is then considered further by investigations into age-related changes in taste perception.

As a survery of present knowledge on non-pathological changes in oral tissues and oral functions associated with aging, which consolidates and makes accessible a wide variety of information, this volume will be of especial interest to geriatricians, oral pathologists, and dentists.
