Joel Berg is Lloyd and Kay Chapman Chair in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Washington, Seattle. He has established the Center for Early Childhood Oral Health (ECOH) at the University of Washington. This multidisciplinary center brings together experts from various fields who collectively are devoted to the ECOH theme. The Center has gained prominence by virtue of the collective body of work in the field of early childhood oral health. The University of Washington Access to Baby and Child Dentistry (ABCD) program is internationally recognized as a best practice in early childhood oral health.

Rebecca L. Slayton is Chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentisry at the University of Iowa where she teaches both pre-doctoral students and pediatric dentistry residents in the clinic and classroom.

In 2000 the US Surgeon General announced that dental caries is a "silent epidemic" and the most prevalent disease affecting children. Though much has been written on the science and clinical practice information related to managing this disease, the publications are diverse in their loci preventing easy access to the reader. Early Childhood Oral Health coalesces all important information related to early childhood oral health in a comprehensive reference for students and other academics. In addition to a thorough discussion of preventing childhood caries, other topics include public health approaches to managing caries worldwide, implementation of new programs to mitigate dental caries in preschoolers, fluoride regimens, and new technologies in caries risk assessment in infants and toddlers. A must-read for practicing and studying pediatric dentists, cariologists, and public health dentists, Early Childhood Oral Health is also relevant for pediatricians and pediatric nursing specialists worldwide.
